2006.10.06 Minutes Present: Erlebacher, Gallivan, Wilgenbusch 1. Dialup Access: The LSC recommended that SCS terminate dialup service. The cost of this service (nearly $1000 per month) was deemed unjustified given the very light usage (one user in August). 2. Password Change: The LSC discussed the recent forced password change and the attack that caused it. The LSC recommended that SCS adopt a policy to require a password change with a frequency to be approved by the SCS faculty but that is at least once per year. 3. Townhall Meetings: Due to the increase in the number of SCS sponsored seminars and the reduction in number of urgent system-related topics for discussion the LSC recommended a change in the frequency of Town Hall meetings to twice per semester; once mid-term and once at the end of the semester. 4. Supercomputer Termination Schedule: 15 November 2006 for Teragold and 20 June 2006 for Eclipse was agreed upon. 5. HPC Proposal: The LSC discussed the status of the HPC proposal for a replacement campus-wide parallel processing system administered by SCS.
