When Ian McCann noticed Engineering Day was on the horizon, he decided he’d go to explore some of the companies that were there and the kinds of jobs they had available. Along with a host of other Scientific Computing students, McCann attended the event on Tuesday, September 27th, and used his time to meet company representatives, discuss his skills and interests, and sign up for more information. Over 75 employers attended this year’s event, including the Department of the Navy, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Coca Cola, Lockheed Martin, IBM, CSX, State Farm Insurance, and the U.S. Postal Service.

As it happens, McCann’s time was well spent; he was contacted almost immediately by two companies for interviews, and has a reserved flight to Tampa for an interview with Nielsen. While he met and talked with many different organizations, McCann was selective in choosing which companies for follow up interactions and visits.

“Engineering day went very well; they had lots of companies that were looking for students in our program. I have my interview with Nielsen on Wednesday [October 19, 2016], and I have a recorded interview I have to do for IBM in the next week. Also, I plan to apply to RMS, CSX and possibly Texas Instruments in the next month. All of those companies were at Engineering Day. There were a couple others that I got emails for, but wasn’t really that interested in, so I didn’t follow up with them.”

With offices in New York and Tampa, the Nielsen Company studies what consumers watch and buy in more than 100 countries across the globe. The data they collect and analyze helps companies recognize and capitalize on trends and attitudes in consumer markets.

Engineering Day at FSU is held twice each year, generally during the first few weeks of the Fall and Spring semesters at the Morgan Building located at 2525 Pottsdamer Street. If you plan to go, consider taking the Innovation route of the Seminole Express, as parking is at a premium when the event is underway. The next Engineering Day and Technical Career Fair will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 beginning at 9am.
